Mark Alan Filbert’s Expertise Mark Alan Filbert has served as Cantor for Saintly Paul Lutheran Church in Denver since 2002. Currently pursuing a Doctor of Sacred Music degree through the Graduate Theological Union, Filbert holds undergraduate degrees in sacred music (BM) and music education (BME) from Oral Roberts University and graduate degrees in sacred music (MSM) and choral conducting (MM) from Southern Methodist University. There he studied organ and harpsichord with Larry Palmer and choral conducting with Lloyd Pfautsch and John Yarrington. He completed further study at Northwestern University, Westminster Choir College, Hamline University, the University of South Carolina, and DePaul University, from which he received the Level III Orff-Schulwerk Teaching Certificate. More recently, he was named a Fellow of Melodious Accord by Alice Parker, and, on sabbatical leave in 2012, he studied carillon with Frans Haagen at the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort and participated in master classes with Harald Vogel, Ton Koopman, Margaret Phillips, and Leo van Doeselaar at the International Organ Academy in Haarlem. As a deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, he has served Lutheran parishes in Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. Filbert’s scholarly articles have been published in Reformed Liturgy and Music, The American Organist, and The Hymn. As a Life Member of The Hymn Society in the US and Canada, he has been a featured performer and/or workshop presenter at four national conferences, and as an active member of the American Guild of Organists, he has served as Sub-Dean, Dean, and Grant Writer for the Denver Chapter. In addition, he works closely with Colorado ABC (Advocates for Body Autonomy and Children's Rights), an organization promoting genital autonomy for children and adults throughout the world. Filbert currently resides in Aurora, with his partner of 26 years, Thomas Strickland, and their two cats, Libby and Austin.
